We at Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center strongly condemn the statement made by President Trump to resume nuclear weapons testing. On Wednesday October 29th, Trump posted the following statement:
“Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately”
We remember that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It also marks the 80th anniversary of the first nuclear bomb test, the Trinity Test, which impacted nearby residents including 19 American Indian pueblos, two Apache tribes and some chapters of the Navajo Nation. We recognize the profound injustice to the Indigenous people of the Marshall Islands through nuclear bomb testing in the Pacific Ocean. We remember our friends in the Western Shoshone Nation who have stood strong against nuclear weapons testing that occurred when the United States violated the Treaty of Ruby Valley to establish the Nevada Test Site.
We hold in our hearts a deep compassion for all who have been impacted by the injustice sown through nuclear weapons production. This is why we continue to practice and build a culture of Nuclear Guardianship. With this latest sign from the Trump Administration to escalate further violence upon the world by resuming nuclear bomb testing, we stand unequivocally in resistance and solidarity to stop this injustice. We vow the following:
We will continue to organize with Indigenous nations, scientists, activists, community groups, medical professionals, experts, teachers, parents, leaders in government, and all who are willing to build a culture of Nuclear Guardianship. We will continue to demand justice and reconciliation for the harm created by nuclear weapons.
We uplift the fundamental principle of integrity to abide by international law and human rights. We recognize that nuclear bomb testing is immoral and it is also illegal! Reference the Treaty of Ruby Valley, the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The U.S. constitution holds that treaties are the supreme law of the land. We will continue to document and speak out against any violations of international law to hold our government accountable.
We recognize the interconnected nature of the injustice perpetuated through the creation and use of nuclear weapons. The existence of nuclear weapons is an inherent threat to all life on earth, therefore we seek the abolition of nuclear weapons. Our evaluation of history is clear - nuclear weapons have become a tool for imperialism, colonialism, and corporate power. We will continue to build awareness around the intersectionality between nuclear weapons and global struggles for liberation from these oppressive forces.
We will continue to educate and build stronger networks of awareness around nuclear weapons and intersectionality so that we can manifest a future of reconciliation which empowers the most marginalized and impacted voices. We uplift the principles to defend human dignity, diversity, and culture. We seek a world that is free from the tyranny of nuclear weapons.

In Solidarity,
Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center
