1957: A Fateful Year for Nuclear Weapons

1957 was a fateful year for the nuclear weapons industry globally. Within a span of less than one month a major accident happened at Rocky Flats in the USA, at Windscale in Britain, and at Chelyabinsk in Russia. This article describes the three incidents and refers to the common elements of harm, secrecy and deceit practiced by the governments of the three countries involved, the only ones then making nuclear bombs. This paper was presented at a conference on environmental consequences of nuclear weapons production, Chelyabinsk, Russia, May 1992.
